Agartala (Tripura) [India] June 28 (ANI): Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) has adopted a resolution to constitute a high-power panel that will carry out proper demarcation of the sixth schedule areas.
The committee will also investigate and detect voters enrolled in electoral rolls of Gram Panchayats as well as the Village Committees under sixth schedule areas.
The sixth schedule under the Constitution provides provisions for the administration of tribal areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram.
“A high-power committee will be formed, and they will visit the spots where such problems are reported and accordingly steps will be undertaken to address the anomalies. The boundaries of the TTAADC will also be demarcated properly which is the root cause of these anomalies,” Chief Executive Member of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Purna Chandra Jamatia told ANI in a telephonic interview.
The one-day session of the TTAADC concluded on Friday.
Jamatia explained further, “Elected member of the District Council Dhirendra Debbarma raised the issue through his calling attention notice, and many of the senior members expressed their views. The final decision was to form a probe panel that will not only detect the voters enjoying dual voting rights but will also take steps to finalise the boundaries of the District Council.”
He added, “According to the preliminary reports, there are around 3,500 odd voters who have their names in both the electoral rolls prepared separately for the Gram Panchayat elections in general areas and Village Committee elections held under the TTAADC areas. As the State Election Commission (SEC) is all set to conduct the panchayat elections, we have been informed that these voters have their names enrolled in the electoral rolls.”
A press statement issued by the information and cultural affairs department of the TTAADC further stated that those villages were attached to general areas in 2010.
“For inclusion or exclusion of a particular area in the sixth schedule, approval from the Governor was necessary. How those places were brought under Gram Panchayats despite being inside the TTAADC areas as per the initial demarcation is unknown. We hope once the committee is formed, we will have some answers,” Jamatia told ANI.
Jamatia also mentioned that the matter was raised before the poll panel but for many years no steps were taken to address the issue. “Once we can demarcate the boundaries of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Councils, these issues will get resolved automatically,” he added.
A total of three bills were passed during the one-day session. (ANI)
